May 21 BoSox Club Luncheon Report

One of the Best Ever BoSox Club Luncheons!

That was the opinion of many as another full house at the Boston/Dedham Hilton enjoyed a very light hearted luncheon with an entertaining guest list and a plenty of laughter.

The ever creative Dick Flavin was "leadoff hitter" with a funny poem about the injustice of his owning a World Series Championship ring while Ted Williams never did.

WEEI and ESPN's Dave O'Brien did a masterful job as MC.  His spot-on impression of Vin Scully while interviewing new NESN host and former Red Sox player Steve Lyons was outstanding.  Lyons calls Boston his "baseball home" and is delighted to be back after 10 years doing Dodgers broadcasts.  Major thanks also to Dave OB for mentioning the BoSox Luncheon on-air Wednesday night.

Former MLB catcher and coach and current Toronto radio and post-season TV Broadcaster, Buck Martinez, shared many stories from his long career in the game including being at an event with Johnny Pesky, Dominic Dimaggio and Bobby Doerr and another with Ted Williams debating hitting techniques with Yankee HOF Joe Gordon and yet another event in Cooperstown where Tommy Lasorda and Ted had some lively discussions.

Toronto hitting coach Kevin Seitzer was next up.  He spent most of his playing days with KC Royals and was Rookie of the year runner up to Mark McGwire.  Steve Lyons said Kevin is one of the most respected hitting coaches in MLB today.  Kevin's son is in the Tampa Bay system and homered against his dad's Blue Jays.

Josh Thole is a high energy catcher with Toronto who specializes in catching knuckleballers.  He has caught RA Dickey with both the Mets and Toronto.  He caught Dickey's no-hitter and also Johan Santana's.  Quite a resume!

Talented Red Sox centerfielder, Jackie Bradley, Jr was then interviewed by Dave O'Brien.  While still very young, Jackie has the poise of a veteran and is always thoughtful and well spoken.  Jackie talked about  how he developed his technique for catching long fly balls and also what life is like being on the team with larger than life personalities such as Dustin Pedroia and Big Papi.

Military guests were saluted and we wrapped up with a memorabilia raffle. Hope you were there.  See you next time on Tuesday, June 17th in Dedham.
