August 15 BoSox Club Luncheon Report

Our latest luncheon on August 15 was packed with fascinating guests. We welcomed Sox EVP, Dr. Charles Steinberg as our emcee.  As Dr. Charles pointed out, the BoSox Club has many unique qualities but one of the most amazing is the fact that we welcome visiting team players, coaches and broadcasters to all our luncheons.  This wasn't lost on Houston Astros manager Bo Porter, who expressed his excitement at being invited, along with former knuckleballer and now Astros broadcaster, Steve Sparks.  Sox Poet Laureate and PA announcer, Dick Flavin kicked things off in style with a new poem honoring the 2014 Red Sox HOF inductees, Pedro, Roger, Nomar and the amazing Joe Castiglione.  Dick created this poem as the honored guest to kick off the Red Sox HOF induction ceremony at Fenway Park the day before!  I am sure Pedro, Roger, Nomar and Joe loved it as much as we did. It was fitting that we also heard from Ian Browne, author of the new book, Idiots Revisited with insights on the "curse reversing" 2004 team.  New to the big leagues, Sox catcher, Dan Butler, talked about arriving at Fenway for the first time and "learning the signs".  This prompted Astros manager Bo Porter to politely request that Dan share the signs with him. Of course, Dan politely refused with a fist bump, much to the amusement of the audience.

Our final guest was Red Sox senior baseball analyst, Tom Tippet.  Tom shared his insights on how the Sox evaluate players and use analytics to enhance the chance of team success.  It's rare to have an opportunity to see behind the scenes at the science of team and game strategy.

Our next luncheon will be the BoSox Man of the Year and Awards luncheon, emceed by our good friend from WBZ, Dan Roche. It will be held at the Dedham Hilton on Thursday, September 24. Order tickets on-line HERE or by calling Audrey at 781-449-8271.
